Algeria-Japan Summit Meeting. Yokohama, 28 August 2019.

Noureddine Bedoui in Yokohama: “Algeria and Japan work towards renewing their bilateral cooperation”.

The Prime Minister, M. Noureddine Bedoui said on Thursday 29th August in Yokohama, that Algeria and Japan were working towards renewing their bilateral cooperation mechanism though the creation of a joint economic commission.

While he was meeting members of the Japan-AU friendship group M. Bedoui stated that the commission would “bring together government officials as well as members of the public and private sectors from both countries”.

Mr. Bedoui said that the negotiation concerning adoption of the two bilateral conventions on promoting and protecting investment were “progressing steadily.

Regarding reservations by some Japanese about the “business and investment climate in Algeria in light of law 51/49” the Prime Minister reminded them that some companies were operating in Algeria in line with this law, such as the Japanese company NIKKEI-JGC which adapted to the Algerian laws and registered its Nigerian franchise SPA Algerie JGC.

Regarding the bilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation, the Prime Minister expressed his wish for the Algeria-Japan parliamentary Group to resume its activities “as soon as possible”.

Recalling that the relations between the two countries dated as back as 1958 with the opening of the National Liberation Front offices in Tokyo, he expressed “his gratitude to all the Japanese for their important help in the Algerian Revolution and their deep conviction towards the just Algerian cause”.

Regarding the Japan-Africa relations, the Prime Minister thanked the Japanese government and the people for their “unwavering support towards the development of Africa manifested in the TICAD initiative” adding that TICAD was “unique in nature” and in line with the “AU agenda 2063”.

In the same perspective, Mr Bedoui revealed his wish to see Japan play a key role in the development that African is aspiring to.

African companies expect Japan to make key investments, support small and medium scale enterprises and accelerate integration of new technologies especially in the sectors of Heath and the Skills Development Program in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals Action Plan 2030; said the Prime Minister.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) to which he is participating representing the Head of State Abdelkader Bensalah.

The Prime Minister also met members of the Japan-African Union Parliamentary Friendship group. The meeting also took place on the sidelines of the Seventh TICAD, on Thursday 29th August in Yokohama, in the presence of the Foreign Affairs Minister Sabri Boukadoum.
