OAU/UA Summits held in Algeria:

  1. 13 to 16 September 1968, Algiers – 14 heads of state are involved and a new member is received : Mauritius. Diallo Telli is reappointed as Secretary General. The works are dominated by the Nigerian civil war and the Israeli-Arab conflict. The need for Nigerian unity is reaffirmed. Finally, a recommendation on the conservation of nature and natural resources of the continent is adopted.
  2. 12 to 16 July 1999, Algiers – This summit registered a record participation of 38 heads of state, a vice president and six prime ministers. Before the meeting, peace agreements were concluded in Sierra Leone and the DRC. Intense efforts were made to try to resolve other conflicts, including the one between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The 35th Summit condemns the taking of power by force by threatening to exclude the perpetrators of coups.
